New Year Resolutions January 2007
Jo Kruithof wrote
There is a useful formula, often attributed to David Gleicher, describing what it takes for purposeful change to occur. The formula is: DxVxP>C, where D=Dissatisfaction, V=Vision, P=Planning, and C =Cost.
It expresses the view that a positive force for change needs Dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs, a Vision of a more desirable state of affairs, and a Plan to get from one to the other. If any one of these is absent, the whole force is zero. The last bit of the formula says that whatever force is created, it must be great enough to overcome the Cost of making the change.
In this context ‘Cost’ is not only about money, but also about people’s resistance to change, the emotional costs, etc. Resistance to change can be great, and usually the bigger the change planned, the bigger the resistance.
For these reasons, the formula describing what it takes for purposeful change to occur, is also often presented in the form: D x V x F > R, where D=Dissatisfaction, V=Vision, F=First steps, and R=Resistance to change.
In this case Dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs, a Vision of a more desirable state of affairs, and taking the First steps, together must be a force greater than Resistance to the change.
